May 17, 2022 Update - DAY 13

A Sack Of Oranges

Welcome back!  Sorry for gap in posts, I decided to head home for a few days to take care of a few things around the house.

As we mentioned in the past few posts, Jackie has required platelets and blood to maintain appropriate platelet counts and hemoglobin levels.  As of today, she has received a total of five units of platelets and three units of blood. I'm gonna give you a heads up right now, another plug for Canadian Blood Services coming shortly and you will see why.  We learned something the other day.

Have you ever decided to make fresh orange juice?  You wander over to your local purveyor of fresh produce and walk out of there with a 5-10 pound sack of oranges.  Yeah, you have.

Then you hauled your sack of oranges into your kitchen.  I sure hope you were not living on the fourth floor of a walk up complex.  You get out the old Cuisinart, you proactively grab a few pitchers and then you get to makin' juice.  Orange after orange you liberate that sweet, sweet juice hidden inside.  Soon, your sack is empty and you realize you only needed a small water glass.  Despite all your efforts and the plethora of oranges you sacrificed, you were able to throw back your spoils like a shot of cheap Jose Cuervo.  You know what I'm talking about. I know you do.

What we learned was platelets are a lot like orange juice.  It actually takes four donors to make one transfusable unit of platelets.  So that means Jackie has needed twenty donors so far just for the platelets.

Shameless plug for CBS in 5...4...3...

Although my beautiful wife is unique in many, many ways, her need for blood products is anything but.  On her nursing unit as well as several others that are similar, it is all too common.  If you can, please consider donating.

Once again, more information can be found at Canadian Blood Services.

Although Jackie is still trudging through the after effects of the chemo, things seem to be heading in the right direction.  It is still early but we have seen the first few indicators that the transplant is starting to work. Jackie's doctors are very happy with what they are seeing.  She has been able to eat for the most part which is crucial at this point.  She still has her morphine pump due to the pain in her mouth and throat, but we are anticipating she will be through this soon.
